Takashi Ishiuchi, a reproductive biologist at the University of Yamanashi and co-leader of the work, believes this breakthrough could fundamentally alter our understanding of reproduction. The traditional concept of requiring both sexes for reproduction is now being re-evaluated.
The team’s inspiration came from nature itself—specifically, the Okinawa rubble goby, a fish known for its ability to change sex. This natural phenomenon sparked the idea for engineered sex reversal.
A Lifeline for Endangered Species?
Beyond rewriting biological textbooks, this technique offers immense potential for conservation.
